This is not an ad free blog.

Actually it is, and I could pretend that this is the result of some high-minded stand on my part, but, the fact is, no-one has ever asked.

If someone came along and said something like “Jon, we’ll pay you €100 per month to host an ad for Baby Slayer Integrated Security Systems & Cluster Munitions Solutions,” I’d probably say no, but if it were something not too deeply morally questionable I’d bite their hands off.

But I believe a site needs a lot of traffic for that to be a realistic possibility. So I have to offer space on this site merely on the basis of personal gratification.

As ani fule kno, personal recommendation is the best kind of publicity, so I am pleased to recommend the above, an English bookshop recently opened in the charming town of Fontenay le Comte, South Vendée.

Well worth a visit is Fontenay.

I know some dead good gîtes just up the road, as it happens.

Anyway, the books are second hand, mostly in English, reasonably priced and the lady who runs the joint is very pleasant.

So go and buy books there.

Crikey, Jon! I’ve always wanted to stay in a place like that… with books…, and highly recommended by nearby English folk like you who can help us out when disaster strikes, (which it always does).

I’m kidding, of course, and you have a future guest. The fun is, will you recognize us?

    :-)

GB – I didn’t notice them, but she did have the “Collected Wit & Wisdom” of Ghengis Khan. A snip at €4.

CI – The feathers could be a big clue I suppose. Unless…

I’ll second the ad, it’s good and makes excellent use of an interesting building. Sadly I heard on Radio 4 yesterday that Amazon now sells more e-books than the traditional!

It’s a bit of a commute, but ok.

DD – It is rather good isn’t it? At one time it was used by the tourist information , but they moved somewhere more central.

Lahavane – It is sad, but I can’t say I’m entirely surprised. I suppose we should be grateful that people still read. I’ll stick to buying paper, though.

Kyknoord – No worries. I’d give you a cup of tea and a bed for the night. And your ex is very unlikely to find you here.
