A Pair of Knits

My eldest and middle daughter (aged 10 & eight ) have taken up knitting.

Today.

Out of the blue.

To say I am perplexed is something of an understatement. OK, I am a complete facist who upholds a ban on television on Sundays (just one day a week without the crystal bucket is enough, I hope, to stop their brains running out of their ears) but there are plenty of other things to do around here.

So why knitting?

Frankly they are not given to pedestrian pastimes.

Something is afoot.

Perhaps they’re planning to make you a lovely bobble hat with matching scarf in the colours of Norwich/Nantes

Does the word ‘guillotine’ come to mind? Search your conscience.

Fly in the web…you beat me to it.

Jon….complete bans never work with offspring of any age, especially prepubescent girls. Always offer a choice.

Ah – but there do have to be limits. They have an absolute choice of entertainment on Sunday, provided that it doesn’t include television. It has always been thus, so they don’t complain.

In the same way we don’t offer them a choice at mealtimes – we’d be cooking three seperate meals if so.

Anyway, I’ve found out what they are doing: it’s all to do with “scarf envy” of the characters in Harry Potter.

Better to ban Harry Potter than the box…I can read anything…back of ceral boxes, etc. if desperate, but the HP stuff defeated me. Mind blowingly banal.

How splendid, Jon – having mastered the kneedles, they ‘re now set to look after you Perfectly in your old age: cosy hot water bottle covers, snuggly foot-warmers for those first creaky moments out of bed, fingerless gloves & shawl for typing…

(Not that I’m suggesting At All that these needs are imminent).

(And we’ve got some comfies you can borrow…)

Thanks Dolores. Although I own a pair of slippers (muddy shoes – that ever-present feature of French country life during the winter – need to be left by the door on pain of death), I’m not quite ready to keel over just yet. Kids keep one young, I am led to believe.

Still, it’s nice they’ve got a new hobby. Plus it has allowed me to convince my eldest that “technology” didn’t just kick off sometime in the 1990s but has been around for several thousands of years, ever since someone took it into their head to join two sticks together with a strip of hide.
